Introduction
The project 'Memory of the Deportation 1945-2025' was born within the framework of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. The promoters of this initiative are Deportazioaren Memoriararako Euskal Koordinakundea 1940-1945 and the Institute of Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights-Gogora.
More than two hundred Basques suffered the horror of deportation between 1940 and 1945 for having defended democracy - represented by the Basque Government and the Second Spanish Republic - in the preceding years. However, the memory of these victims and their experience has been unknown to the majority of Basque society and the deportation, as this episode is known in Europe, has not formed part of our collective memory.
The initiative was created with the aim of raising awareness and spreading the memory of the deportation in our environment and the objective is to go beyond the anniversary, integrating the activity into Gogora's strategic plans and giving it continuity.
Throughout the year 2025 different actions have been organised, you can consult those already programmed in this section which will be updated to add new activities.
