The Gogora Institute resumes the Remenbrance Square travelling exhibition in Getxo
The exhibition can be visited at the Plaza de la Estación square in Las Arenas from 13 to 19 March
The Mayor of Getxo, Imanol Landa, and the GOGORA Director, Aintzane Ezenarro, today unveiled the programme of the Remembrance Square travelling exhibition which is now coming to Getxo. "Remembrance Square" is a citizen participation project that began a year and which seeks to compile and showcase accounts of what happened in the Basque Country in recent decades in order to construct a shared and pluralistic memory. The exhibition can be visited at a marquee in the Plaza de la Estación square in Las Arenas from 13 to 19 March.
According to Imanol Landa, this initiative is a further opportunity to continue to strive to discredit violence and to foster coexistence based on respecting people's fundamental rights, in this case, from the perspective of knowledge about and the memory of the human drama contained in the testimony, the account of the victims featured in the exhibition. Those victims also include residents from Getxo. Landa recalled that, in the municipality, "our aim is for a Getxo that is also known for coexistence between different people and for its commitment to peace. One of the fundamental cornerstones of this commitment lies in the knowledge, recognition and memory of the victims. This underlies the plenary agreements of March and June 2009 on victims of terrorism and of Franco's regime and the Spanish Civil War, respectively, and is behind our support of the Day of Remembrance under the aegis of the Basque Government".
Objectives
Aintzane Ezenarro explained that this Remembrance Square travelling exhibition which started in January 2016 has three objectives:
o To disseminate and share the memory through an exhibition and be the driving force for reflection constructed among all of us.
o To provide a space where the general public can leave their accounts.
o To work on remembrance at municipal level by driving dynamics in order to share critical reflections on the past.
Gexto Programme
The Gogora Director then outlined the events organised in Getxo around the exhibition:
o 6.00 p.m. on 13 March: Exhibition opening ceremony.
o 7.00 p.m. on 14 March: spotlight on the account of Jordi Lidón, the son of José Mª Lidón, the last person murdered by ETA in Getxo.
o 7.00 p.m. on 16 March: victim roundtable with the participation of Carmen Galdeano, Alex Moreno, Jaione San Sebastian and Pedro Román.
In the same way as in the other locations, the Getxo Remembrance Square will organised morning workshops for 4th year compulsory secondary education, upper secondary and vocational training students, when they will learn about the key points to construct the memory for critical reflection.
Exhibition Venue
The exhibition will be set up in a marquee by Las Arenas Station and will be divided into different areas:
o Account recording area: Visitors to the exhibition can record or write in situ their accounts of what they remember.
o Account videos: Visitors can listen to the accounts of victims of Franco’s dictatorship, terrorism and the victims coming under Decree 107/2012.
o Screening and discussion area: Two documentaries will be screened and group dynamics and talks will be organised:
o Message mural: Visitors to the exhibition can leave a written message on a mural and also in an urn, to be kept at the Gogora Institute and to be published on the Remembrance Square website.
