The Remembrance Square initiative to be in Lasarte-Oria

Fecha de publicación:

The remembrance and coexistence participative initiative will be in Plaza de Okendo square from 3 to 9 April. Along with the opportunity to visit the exhibition, the general public can attend the different discussion panels.

Remembrance Square will reach Okendo next Monday. As Mayor Jesus Zaballos and the Director of the Gogora Institute, Aintzane Ezenarro, stressed, the initiative seeks to delve further "into the shared memory". Above all, it wants to "make sure that those people who were victims of violence are now heard".

All the members of the political groups represented on Lasarte-Oria Town Council were at the presentation. In the words of Ezenarro, it is "great news for us", "because we all have to be involved in constructing the historical memory".

Three spaces

The exhibition in the marquee set up in Plaza Okendo will have three main areas. As Zaballos and Ezenarro explained, each one of them will showcase a differentiated aspect of the historical memory. The first "will focus on the victims of terrorism". It will showcase the testimony of people who suffered the violence of ETA and also victims of GAL, BVE or AAA.

The second area will be on the Basques who have suffered police violence. The last one will feature the historical memory and the victims of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's dictatorship.

Panel discussions

Two discussion panels will be held on 4 and 6 April in order to encourage reflections on historical memory and coexistence.

Josu Elespe, Feli Goikoetxea and Manoli Urritegi, victims of violence, will take part in the first. They will describe their personal experiences to the general public at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday. As the organisers stressed, "we would appreciate the people here taking part".

Three local mayors will speak at the same time on the Thursday. The three are from different political backgrounds: The Mayor of Lasarte-Oria, Jesus Zaballos (PSE-EE - Socialist Party of the Basque Country), the Mayor of Hernaniko, Luis Intxauspe (EH Bildu - leftwing Basque nationalist and pro-independence political coalition), and the Mayor of Urnieta, Mikel Pagola (EAJ - Basque Nationalist Party). They will discuss the fundamental points to construct peace at grassroots levels with the sights set on the future.

Documentaries will be screened at Remembrance Square every day. At 4.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. on weekdays and at 1.00 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. at weekends and bank holidays.

The members of the Institute for Remembrance have also organised activities for young people. Every morning, local schoolchildren will visit Remembrance Square to see the exhibition and be encouraged to share their thoughts.
